Unfortunately, a mattress has a higher chance of becoming damaged when it is being moved. When moving and storing your mattress, it is important to do it correctly, so you can keep your mattress in good shape for years to come. Below are some of our best tips and tricks for storing your mattress and box springs correctly.

The Top Tips for Storing a Mattress and Box Spring

  1. Dismantle the Bed Frame: Take the bed frame apart and put the bolts and screws inside of a plastic bag. Tape the plastic bag containing the bolts and screws to the headboard.
  2. Do Some Preparation Work on the Mattress and Box Spring: Before moving and storing your mattress and box spring, it is important to clean it off well. A mattress that is stored dirty has a higher chance of forming mold or mildew while in storage. Us a vacuum cleaner to suck up any dirt or pet hair and clean it with an upholstery cleaner.
  3. Protect the Mattress and Box Spring with a Mattress Bag: Keep your mattress and box spring clean while in storage by covering them with a mattress bag. Mattress bags are made from breathable plastic and are designed to protect your mattress while it is in storage. Secure the mattress bag to your box spring and mattress using tape.
  4. Lay the Mattress and Box Spring Flat While in Storage: While it is totally acceptable to move your mattress on its side, it is not a good idea to store it on its side. Storing a mattress long-term on its side can result in the springs and coils of the mattress shifting during storage. This can result in the mattress becoming permanently damaged.
  5. Store Your Mattress in a Climate Controlled Storage Unit: It is important to store your mattress and box spring in a location where it will not be prone to changes in temperature. Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause mold and mildew to grow within your mattress’ fabric. When storing your mattress, use a climate-controlled storage unit over a traditional self-storage unit. Climate controlled storage maintains a stable temperature year-round, ideal for storing a mattress.
  6. Keep Heavy Items Off of the Mattress: When storing, do not place heavy items on top of the mattress. Over time, items placed on top of the mattress can cause damage to the inner springs and coils.
